The Yellow Belt represents introductory materials at their most basic level and targets individuals without a Six Sigma background who want to expand their knowledge of a topic and find out whether or not it's right for them. Further, it can help people fill competency gaps between existing skills and Six Sigma principles. One example is those who attended college in the humanities and do not have a background in statistics.
In contrast, Green Belt certification is intermediate level and goes into significantly more depth. It is designed to allow participants to gain skills that enable them to work as part of organizational project teams. This option is suitable for those with limited exposure to Six Sigma, including engineers and others in technical fields where statistical processes sometimes overlap.
